Following the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Jesse Milan Jr., president and CEO of AIDS United, issued the following statement:
“Justice Ginsburg dedicated her life to seeking justice, particularly equal rights under the law for women. She fought discrimination as a lawyer before joining the court, and she spent her time on the Supreme Court doing all she could to make this country live up to its promises of equality, liberty and justice for all. “She was also a strong ally of the LGBTQ+ community. When several states had moved forward with marriage equality but before the Supreme Court made marriage equality the law of the land, she made history by proudly officiating as a sitting justice at a same-sex wedding. She most recently voted in the majority to protect LGBTQ+ people from discrimination under existing sex discrimination laws. “She was a giant among us, and she will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with her loved ones, and our hope is that our Supreme Court continues forward on the path she helped forge.
May her memory be a blessing and an inspiration to us all.”
