AIDS United’s next Midwest Syringe Services Programs: Virtual Institute is coming up in just a few weeks! Registration for our two pre-institute webinars is now open.
Syringe Services in the Midwest: Challenges, Barriers, and Opportunities to Starting and Maintaining a Program
Tuesday, Nov. 2, from 2-3:30 p.m. CDT
Syringe services programs in the Midwest are uniquely situated across differing legislative and political contexts. This session will examine this landscape from the perspective of both established programs and jurisdictions who are still navigating barriers in the region. Speakers will offer their insights on the process of developing a syringe services program, challenges in implementation and reaching community, and contingency planning in the face of hostile legislation and instability. Participants will take away concrete strategies and next steps for starting and sustaining their own syringe services program. Click here now to register.
Harm Reduction and Racial Justice: Discussing the Intersections to Create Avenues to Equitable Syringe Services Programs
Thursday, Nov. 4, from 2-3:30 p.m. CDT
Harm reduction has always existed at the intersection of human rights movements, ranging from sex work decriminalization to reproductive justice to racial justice. Despite the burden of both the HIV and overdose epidemics falling on communities of color, large harm reduction organizations and syringe services programs have been historically white-led. This session will address the need to make space across the Midwest to talk about the engagement and leadership of BIPOC communities in syringe services programs, the intersection of harm reduction with the social justice movements and ways to make our harm reduction offerings more inclusive and BIPOC-centered. These two pre-institute webinars will lay the groundwork for our full institute, to be held on Nov. 8 and 9, 2021. Stay tuned for additional registration information for the full institute in the upcoming days.
